This shift is changing the way we do business, and it certainly will continue.
More than fifty years ago, people who were employed as secretaries saw a bright future. It seems as though as the time went by, the jobs of secretaries became easier. There was a movement from typewriters and photocopying machines to computers, scanners, and internet. About 50 years ago, in 1961, Today’s Secretary, a trade magazine, envisioned that the secretaries of the future would be taking month-long vacations and would start their work later in the day.
Fifty years ago, office secretaries were prized human resources of companies. Much has changed today. The internet and telecommunication systems allowed work to be carried out online. This made office assistants seemingly expendable professionals. More bosses have turned to virtual secretaries to arrange their schedules, write their letters, make appointments, and keep documents.
Farming out jobs to online service providers became a trend in the 21st century. Clients found out that they can save on operational cost by hiring people who need not work at their physical offices. Virtual offices became popular in this current trend. A capable secretary who is internet savvy can actually perform tasks online. There is less need to go to the office of the boss just to attend to one’s job.
Outsourcing of secretarial jobs to online office assistants peaked during the recession. Companies have discovered that hiring virtual assistants made them save a lot on wages. It also removed from them the responsibility of sending assistants to training and setting up working facility for them. It is as though service is automatically available by simply looking for people with the right qualities and requirements—people whom you can now find on the internet.
This change has redistributed employment. As the recession peaked in 2008, more companies sought survival by laying off employees and resorting to cheaper services—which were offered by online service providers. Online secretarial services are way cheaper than the services offered by office-based secretaries. As a result, more companies demanded for these services. As the rule speaks, the increase in demand heralds an increase in supply. More companies offering online office services were established.
The surge of business process outsourcing resulted in the fast decline of office-based secretaries, causing an outrage towards outsourcing. But the complaints of the unemployed barely halted the growth of virtual assistance industry. There was a steady decline in the demand for an office secretary. Virtual secretaries became more important in the current world. There is a strong indication in the market that this trend will continue. It compels a change in the perspective and attitude of the traditional office secretary. Virtual office assistants are the present—and the future!
